ACCIDENT IN FOG.
At the inquest into the death of Mr. Thomas Borthwick Banks, aged 22. single, of G, Euston Road, Sandringham. it was stated that he was fatally injured when the car he was driving* was involved in a collision with a motiTr van on the Main South Road, near Rangiriri. early on the morning of Januarv 22. There was a thick fog at the time. Mr. Banks, who was a motor mechanic, put his hand in his pocket, after asking his companion to roll a cigarette for him. and as he did so the car swerved slightly Ito the right. Ihe van appeared, and | Mr. Banks immediately swerved to the left, but was unable to avoid a collision. It was not stated in evidence that Mr. Hanks took both hands off the wheel, as previously reported. A formal verdict, exculpating the van driver, was returned.
The Romans believed that dog star, Sirius, rising with the sun on the days from .Julv 3 to August 11, added to its heat and produced the hottest period of the year. Hence, "Dog days."
