LONDON'S WATER.
PROTECTION SCHEME.
MR RAID PRECAUTIONS.
CAKOVFUOE RESERVOIRS.
» . '■ J, £ | A acheme costing £500,000 is being devisfe!' fqr the protection of London's water supply in the event of air raids.
A special air raids precautions officer has worked out the plan, -,in close cooperation with the Air Raids Precautions Department of the Home Office. It is understood that a system of "shadow" reservoirs is contemplated-— dummy lakes on a fairly small scale, set far enough away from the real water containers to baffle raiding aircraft pilots.
|_ Camouflage of an elaborate character |is being planned to cover pumping stations and reservoirs. Bv an ingenious system of painted canvas floating on the surface of the water on buoys, the whole appearance of a reservoir may be altered' from the viewpoint of an aerial observer.
Alternative plants, operated by electric motor-driven pumps may be ercctcd to take the place of the older type of pumping station, with its huge chimneys, massive pumps, and extensive outbuildings—an easy target from the air. Mobile pumps, fitted on lorries, are
another means of ensuring an alternative water supply. This is a plan which is being considered with special emphasis.
