GAMING ACT.
MR. SAVAGE'S DENIAL.
STATEMENT REFUTED. NO IMMEDIATE COMMISSION. (By Telegraph•—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A denial was given by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, to a statement by Mr. B. S. Irwin, president of the Forbury Park Trotting Club, that Mr. Savage had promised a deputation from the Trotting Conference last year that he would set up a Royal Commission at once to deal with the question of racing and trotting. Mr. Savage said this morning that he made no promise to set up an immediate commission. Quoting from the minutes of the deputation, he said he made it clear that while there were other things the Government had to do, he was not going to promise to do anything to amend the Gaming Act. He quoted the following .from his remarks to the deputation:—"l think there is room for improvement ... but I am not going to be a party to doing anything until the big things which I have forecast have been made part and parcel of the laws of this land." He denied promising to do something if he came back. He told them he would do what he could while he was here and let the other fellow do what he could when he was gone.
