An announcement that the Federal Government intended to increase defence expenditure during the present, financial year to enable it to accelerate its defence programme, was made by the Minister of Defence, Mr. Thorby. The Minister said tlie Government had decided to spend £3.>.000,000 oil defence in the. next five years, of which £11,.">00,(100 had been voted for expenditure this year. It was intended to ask Parliament to increase that vote.
