STRONGER DEFENCE. Australia's Scheme For Next Five Years. COMPULSORY TRAINING? United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 11 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. An announcement that the Federal Government intended to increase defence expenditure during the present, financial year to enable it to accelerate its defence programme, was made by the Minister of Defence, Mr. Thorby. The Minister said tlie Government had decided to spend £3.>.000,000 oil defence in the. next five years, of which £11,.">00,(100 had been voted for expenditure this year. It was intended to ask Parliament to increase that vote. Parliament, he said, will also in the near future discuss the introduction of compulsory military training 1 , but he could not say what action would be taken.
