BAKER SELLS LIQUOR.

FINED ON ONE CHARGE Evidence of two visits to a baker's shop in Ponsonby Road on January 25 and when lie purchased two bottles of beer for 1/8, was given by Constable i Hunter in the Police Court yesterday afternoon, in the case of Leslie Ansley, charged on two informations with selling liquor without h license. Mr. J. J. Sullivan appeared for Ansley, who, at first ; denied the charges, 'but later amended his plea in each case to guilty. In asking for leniency Mr. Sullivan said defendant had not gone into the witness box and told untruths. He conducted a legitimate 'business; as a baker and the case was not one bf the usual sly grog type, wlierre a man made an exclusive living jfrom illegal sales of liquor. Then again Ansley had sold the liquor at a profit of only, twopence per bottle. As Sub-Inspector Flanagan stated, only a small quantity of liquor was found oh the premises when they were raided. Ansley had never been in any trouble previously. "There are degrees in these cases," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. "I will take into account that he did not go into the box and tell me a lot of fibs, as many men do." Having given the magistrate an undertaking not to trade in liquor again, Ansley was fined ,;£ls on one charge and convicted and discharged on tlie other.
