FIRE IN STAND.
RACECOURSE SCARE. OUTBREAK AT COURSE. LITTLE DAMAGE CAUSED. Some excitement was caused on the Paeroa racecourse about 3.30 yesterday afternoon, when it was found that the new members' stand, which was being used for the first time, was on fire. There was a large number of people on the stand at the time, but oflicials quietly, though expeditiously, got them all off. The outbreak was under the verandah in the birdcage, and when it was discovered smoke was coming from the lower floor and was issuing from several points of the building, willing helpers soon rooted up the boards of the verandah, and a bucket brigade quickly extinguished the outbreak. Except for some charred floor boards in the vicinity of the fire, and those torn from the structure in order to get at the flames, no damage was done. The stand, which cost £7400 to lniild without extras, had only been opened a few minutes before by the Hon. W E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, who had made a special trip to l'aeroa to perform the ceremony.
