RUSSIA AND COMMUNISM.
A series of letters by an ex-C'onsul of Russia has been appearing in the international Press. He is called Alex Barmaine and is a rabid Communist, i.e.. a monomaniac incapabl" of more than the one idea and regarding all suggestions of compromise as treachery. Lenin soon found that Communism would not work and began to modify it; in one letter (4) Barmaine tells us that he was one of a partv who opposed any deviation from Karl Marx, and that for that reason they had been marked for destruction. He says (letter 1) that to call Russia Communist is '"the greatest lie in the world." That, is plain enough as to what the Communist party thinks ( ,f Ru-sia to-dav. and it should know. He tells us that Stalin has cut away from hi~ Communist past (]ett t has betrayed the Revolution (letter I>, is destroying in IJus-ia the very idea of Communism (letter and its leaders (letter 2): indeed, that he is engaged in exterminating the whole Communist party (letter 1). Is it not time. then, that the European Powers and Japan should cease to condemn Russia as Communist and therefore impossible ( as an ally? For here we have it. on the authority of thi Communists themselves, that Russia is struggling to five herself from this Red madness. E. S. DUKES.
