STRETTO UNLUCKY AT WELLINGTON.
ORATORY WINS THOMPSON. Laughing Lass Leads All the Way in Sprint — Royal Chief the St. Leger. The feature of the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting, held at Trentham yesterday, was the success of Oratory in the chief event, the Thompson and Laughing Lass, who races in the same colours, in the Railway Handicap. Both are owned by Mr. T. A. Duncan and trained by L. G. Morris, and in each instance they led all the way. Stretto met with interference and dropped back, otherwise she would have been much harder to dispose of. In the circumstances she put up an excellent performance to gain third place. The New Zealand St. Leger Stakes was robbed of a good deal of interest through the withdrawal of Courtcraft. He injured a tendon, probably through striking himself, and his trainer, F. Davis, will not know for a few days if the trouble is serious. Royal Chief beat his solitary rival, The Crooner, nicely. The weather was fine and the track fast, while the totalisator showed an increase of £13,403 10/, the sum of £41,602 going through the machine compared with £28,198 10/ last year.
