The death ha? occurred of Captain Wv brants Olpliert. D.S.O. (Start. D.S.C..
marine superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Company, at the age of 09.
Captain Olphert was born in England in 1879. He was educated at Bristol Grammar School and in H.M.S. \\ orcester, and joined the New Zealand Shipping Company in ISSK3. During the war he was commander of the Q-ehip Salvia, which was sunk in action with a submarine in .June, 1917. He was taken prisoner of war and kept in solitary confinement at Willielmshaven and" Freiburg, making three fruitless attempts to escape.
At th<s end of the war lie came to Xew Zealand, and was appointed assistantmarine superintendent to the company. He succeeded Captain Bone a.s superintendent.
Captaan Olphert founded the Wellington division of the R.X.Y.R. about ten years ago, and has been its commander ever since. It is generally recognised that the R.X.V.R. movement in Xew Zealand owes much to his interest and energy.
Captain Olphert married Miss Evelyn Tennant in 1910. They had two sons and three daughters.
Flags on a number of ships berthed at the Auckland wharves were lowered to half-mast when the news of Captain Olphert's death reached the local office of the Xew Zealatid Shipping C'ompanv.
