WARNING NOTE.
AWARD RESTRICTIONS.
EFFECT ON HOTELS.
AUSTRALIAN EXAMPLE,
(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.)
' CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
A note of warning about the dangers involved in award restrictions in the hotel service in New Zealand was sounded by Mr. Ernest E. Sharp, a director of a large electrical firm in London, who is at present on a tour of New Zealand.
Mr. Sharp said that in Australia he had. found the people most hospitable individually, but nationally the reverse was the case.
The shortening of hotel workers' hours, while beneficial to the employees, bad produced a state of affairs under which it was impossible to secure a meal. at a hotel after a certain hour.
Mr. Sharp said he had several such experiences in Australia, and often after he had made a long journey throughout the day. It was most distressing, he said, to be told that the kitchen had been closed down, and that the only meal obtainable was from a fish and chip stall in the street.
"I have not encountered such a position in New Zealand," said Mr. Sharp, "but I have a suspicion from some of my experiences that there is a tendency for a Similar state of affairs to develop here."
"If such a thing did happen, it would have a detrimental effect on tourist traffic, as stories of such incidents travel quickly. It would be a pity, as New Zealand is such a delightful country for travel," he added.
