Catches at Mayor Island,
Good sport was enjoyed by launch parties during the Xew Year holidays on the deep-sea fishing grounds off Mayor Island, the catches totalling two sword fish and six mako sharks. The swordfi«h gave excellent displays. Several other swordfish were hooked, but broke free. Swordfish are reported to be very numerous, and no doubt the hot weather has been a factor in bringing the game fish along earlier than usual. School fish are exceptionally numerous.
From the launch Tui, in charge of Mr. F. Wilkins. a mako of 4001b was captured by Mr. G. P. Burns, of Auckland. Mr. Reid, of Dunedin, caught a mako of 3501b. A striped marlin of 2301b also was landed.
A party on Mr. L. B. Hart's launch Spindrift secured a swordfish and two makos. From Mr. Kendall's launch Royal Saxon two mako sharks were landed.
