VACATION

CHRISTMAS Is Almost Upon Us Carnival Spirit Has Begun With Christmas almost upon us, the spirit of carnival is already in the air. For this is the Spirit of Christmas as it manifests itself in our land—when the rearrangement of the seasons in the Southern Hemisphere calls for a break from the Christmas traditions of the Old World. Here Christmastime is holiday time, and the happy allure of summer vacation days is irresistible. RACING AT ELLERSLIE. —One of the most popular of the holiday attractions which Auckland ha« to offer is the summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, to be held on this occasion on December 27 and 29 and January I and 3. Against the beautiful setting of the Ellersiie grounds thousands will watch the running of such leading events as the Auckland Cup, the Summer Cup, the Great Northern Derby and the Grandstand Handicap. A comprehensive schedule of race trains has been arranged by the Railways Department. TAURANGA REGATTA. Another event of the year is the annual Boxing Day regatta and aquatic carnival at Tauranga, one of the North Island's most attractive seaside resorts. Within easy access of Auckland, Tauranga is well served by the Railways Department and the fares are surprisingly low. SCENIC BUS TRIPS. Near at hand Auckland is endowed with a veritable wealth of scenic assets. Extremely popular are Titirangi and Helensville, for which buses of the Auckland Bus Company's fleet leave the transport terminal several times daily. THE WATERFRONT DRIVE. Along the magnificent waterfront road Messrs. L. J. Keys, Limited, maintain a splendid service to Mission Bay, Kohimarama, St. Helier's and Karaka Bay. Buses also run from Newmarket to these incomparable beaches. The trip along the drive is worth while in itself. SUNNY NORTH SHORE PLAYGROUNDS.—With the now famous Milford swimming pool as a special attraction, the sunny North Shore beaches are ever growing in popularity. The pool, which i« the largest in New Zealand, is equipped with a lighting system for night bathing and what could be better fun? The Pirate Shippe is another popular rendezvous. Ferries and buses serve Milford, as well as the popular Devonport, Cheltenham, Narrow Neck, Takapuna, and Brown's Bay beaches. RAILWAY EXCURSIONS ARE POPULAR.—For an easy and inexpensive holiday from the city, the Railways Department offers a popular avenue. Following its policy of catering for the needs of the work-weary city dweller, the department has arranged for this season a programme of attractive excursions. One will be to Tauranga and The Mount (December 25 and 26) and another a day trip from Whangarei to Opua and back (December 26).
