SHEEP KILLERS.
WATCHMAN FIRES. TWO MEN ESCAPE. LEAVE ELEVEN CARCASES. MELBOI'RXK. December 15. A night watchman fired five shots at two men he disturbed in the resting yards at Flemin»ton. Before the watchman, Mr. Harper, discovered the men they had killed 11 sheep. Mr. Harper told Detective-Sergeant Lawrence and police from Burwood that he was patrolling along a dividing fence when he was attracted by the bark of a dog. There were about 200 sheep in the resting paddock. They appeared to be restless. A* Mr. Harper walked towards the flock tic heard a man call out: "Look nut. sdinoone's commcr." Iwo men then from anion? the sheep and began running toward the other side of the yard. Mr. Harper called on them to stop. '"When they failed to do so, I pulled out my revolver and fired five shots at them," Mr. Harper told police. None of the shots is believed to have taken effect, as the men climbed over a fence and disappeared. Tn a corner of the resting yards Mr. Harper found 11 sheep. Each had been killed by a blow on the head. Four of the .sheep had their throats cut. as though being prepared for skinning.
