CEMENT WORKS.
PROFITEERING ALLEGED. COUNTY COUNCIL COMPLAINT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TIRAU, Saturday. Strong protest was made to Mr. A. F. Moneur, M.P., by members of the Matamata County Council at alleged profiteering by cement manufacturers in New Zealand. Mr. Moneur was urged to make representations to the Minister of Customs to secure the abolition of tariffs on imported cements. The chairman. Mr. J. W. Anderson, said he knew the Minister had told another local body that the matter would be considered when tariffs were again under revision, but he did not think this was a satisfactory reply since the revision might not come for several years and then abolition in the direction asked might not be secured. Mr. C. F. Hawke said he thought the public was being exploited. Huge profits, he alleged, were being made. Mr. Moneur promised to make further representations to the Minister on the matter.
