OBITUARY.

M. EDOUARD JOUBERT.

EX FRENCH CONSUL.

Last September M. Edouard M. V. M. Joubert, French Consul in New Zealand, was compelled to ask to be relieved of his official duties on account of illhealth. He entered a private hospital in Auckland, and it was his intention to return to France as soon as his health permitted. He died this morning. M. Joubert had bi-en Consul for fiance in New Zealand for the past six years. He arrived in Auckland on June 29, 1931. During the Great War he served as an artillery officer, and was wounded at Verdun in 191 S. M. Joubert was awarded the Croix de Gurre, and was a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. He entered the foreign consular service in 1909. After consular

work at Bremen and Rotterdam, he was appointed to Prague, where he was stationed for 12 years before he came to Auckland. M. .Joubert was 55 years old, and during his stay in New Zealand he did much to further the economic relations between his country and the Dominion. M. .Toubert formed many close friendships with business people in the city of Auckland. Fie was dean of the Consular Corps, a position lie had to resign on account of his health.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, after which the funeral will leave for Hillsboro* Cemetery.

REV. S. GRIFFITH. After a record of pioneering achievement in the service of his cliurvh, the death has occurred of the Rev. S. Griffith, a well-known Methodist minister. in his 70th year. Mr. Griffith, although on the retired list for some years, had been doing regular supply work. He arrived in New Zealand in 1880. and enrolled as a private student at the Wesleyan College, conducted by the late Rev. Thomas Buddie, at the Three Kings. After serving as a student Mr. Griffith was appointed to his first circuit at Palmerston North in ISB2. After two years he became second minister in the Grafton circuit, and was in charge of Parnell and Newmarket.* In 1880 he was transferred to Tauranga. and was involved in the aftermath of the Tarawera eruption. For the next 38 years lie was stationed in various parts of New Zealand. In 1920. while in Dunedin. Mr. Griffith retired from circuit work and settled in Auckland. For ten years he was secretary-manager of the Methodist orphanages in Auckland. and for some time he was treasurer to the Auckland Ministers' Association and a member of the board of directors of the British Sailors' Society. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, and two sons.
