AGAIN HIGHER.

PRICES FOR WOOL.

FIRST WELLINGTON SALE.

BETTER LINES %J> UP.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON", this day. The first Wellington wool sale of the season to-day opened briskly. Continental bidding was very keen, but the passing in of lot* was frequent. The offering was 20..i00 bales.

Competition was exceedingly keen, but at buyers' limits, which they were not prepared to exceed. Prices, in the opinion of some brokers, were up by a halfpenny and even threefarthings on Napier for better lines, and the >habby wool 011 par to a farthing better. Competition became keener as the •sale proceeded. Top prices in earlier catalogues were: Ha If bred, llld to 13] d; fine crossbred, lld to l.ljd: medium crossbred, 10] d to 13.Jd; lambs' wool. 12<1 to 14id; pieces. (id to 7Jd and B]d to 10} d; crutcliiii'js. ii.)d to 7ld and 8d to 9sd; necks. Kid to lid. Continent Springs a Surprise. The demand early in the sale came mainly from the Continent, which was eager for all lines, but a few lots of lamb*' wool ottered were not keenly competed for. The Oernian demand came as a welcome surprise. The wool offered was described by competent judges as tender and much lighter than that sent forward for the December sale last year. This was attributed to the sheep not having done so well this year, particularly in the iWairarapa; but the quality was better than that of the wool sent to the Napier sale. Accordingly it commanded better values. The demand was for strong wools and one line of such B ewes made 14d. Penny Above Auckland. Probably the prices will prove to be a penny better than at Auckland and a full Id or Jd above Napier for similar lines of wool. •Tilpan was a spectator and the United Slates a small buyer. Canada was believed to l>e buying. New Zealand firms bought sparingly.
