SPRINTER AMISS.

ROYAL DANCE INJTXRED.

SOME PROMISING NOVICES

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

MATAMATA, Friday.

Royal Dance was cut about while running in the paddock and has been eased up. It will be at least two months before he will race again.

Mr. J. Clothier has two others working, the four-year-old Good March, by Spear Dance from Lady March, and the three-year-old Broadway Bill, by Spear Dance from Sweet Colleen (dam of Lord Val). The former is a big gelding, standing 17 hands, and he will take time. He begins slowly in his work, but gallops well when he gets going. He will probably make his debut at Te Rapa this month. Valspear is bowling along well in his work and should shortly be ready to produce his best. He w nominated for only one race at Te Rapa, but is entered each day at the Takapuna meeting. He looks an improved horse and should be a distinct possibility in the Takapuna Plate.

The three-year-old gelding by Bronze Eagle—Koura, in R. Mateer's stable, is showing splendid development. He has not yet been given any fast work, but is quite ready for it. However, it will be after New Year before Dr. Grant's gelding sport* silk. Mateer has also a very promising two-year-old brown gelding by King Lu from a sister to Valcuir, who never raced. This novice will carry the colours of his breeder, Mr. Dan Casey, who is no newcomer to the ranks of owners.

W. J. McLean is keeping Jonathan, Bass and Marie's Acre up to their work. He also has a Philamor —Lady Marie colt who shows promise, and also an Acre three-year-old Ally. This youngster is well forward and is showing good galloping ability.

Calcutta, now in J. W. Cathro's stable, is still showing signs of lameness, and it U doubtful if he will race for some time. Maori Song is not doing much either, as the hard tracks do not suit this sprinter.

I'athro has Scotland, Con Fuoco and Knge nominated at Te Rapa, but a selection will not be made for the Waikato Cup until their trainer returns from Riccarton with Enge. Mr. J. Corbett's two youngsters, The Cardinal, by Xight Raid—Palestrina, and Caspian, by Vaals—Lightship, are developing, but are not being hurried. The former, particularly, has furnished well.

Cathro has nothing entered for the ARC summer meeting. It is probable Irt £ Tl 11 5 t /" m t0 the ™ id <"« part of the island for Christmas and

J. Gray is now established at Mataniata with Grand City and Pull o' Scotch. Both horses are ready for fast work. *
