FAILED TO STAMP.
AH «INTERIM RECEIPT." 1 (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Decision was reserved by Mr. J. H. Lux ford, S.M., to-day, in a case in which Independent Motor Sales was charged with failing to stamp a receipt. The evidence was to the effect that a receipt for £3 was issued by a girl in the office, but she did not think it needed a stamp, as she regarded it merely as an interim receipt. She knew there was a dispute between the manager and Keith Elford Craig, who had purchased a truck on time payment. The manager had told him he was expected to pay £5 within a day or two, or the truck would be taken back. Mrs. Craig came to the office with £3. The girl did not think the manager would take £3, and she gave a receipt not on the ordinary form. The manager had a receipt ready on the proper form for £5. Both this and the interim receipt were put into Court. The truck had been taken back.
Counsel, supporting a claim that the disputed receipt did not need a stamp, quoted Several Scottish authorities, and referred particularly to 1.0.U.'5. The Magistrate: It is rather surprising to know that they accept 1.0.U.'s in Scotland.
