"RIVAL" BUILDERS.
STATE AND CONTRACTOR.
(From Our Correspondent.) GISBORNE, Friday. The Tenders Board of the Public Works Department has decided not to accept a tender for the construction of a bridge over the Whangaparaoa River, near Cape Runaway, on the East Coast main highway, and the work is to be proceeded with by the Department itself. Tenders for this work closed early in October. The bridge will be about 300 ft in length and will consist of six spans in reinforced concrete. It should be open for traffic well before next summer.
In the meantime, slow progress has been made with the construction of the larger Raukokore Bridge, 14 or 15 miles on the Opotiki side of Cape Runaway, although the contract time for this work expired some time ago. The contractor experienced difficulty in securing delivery of the necessary steel. The progress of these two large bridges, one being built by contract and the other by the Department, will be watched with no small interest, and a certain amount of friendly rivalry will be engendered.
