BIG BETTING.
THE TRUMP COSTLY. TOOK £180,000 FROM RING. "It can safely be said that The Trump took £180,000 out of the ring when he won the Melbourne Cup." said Mr. Bob Jansen, leuder of the Victorian betting ring. Yet probably nobody thought to take him in a double for the two Cups. The "books" made a set against him for a while, but all the time there was a stream of public money. "Tens of thousands of people who don't know much about racing were caught by the glamour of The Trump's unbeaten sequence of wins thi B season, and backed him in the belief that the sequence would continue," said Mr. Janeen. "There were stories that The Trump looked a bit drawn and tired in the Mackinnon Stakes on the finst day, but these were refuted by connections, and T helieve the jockey was very confident that The Trump was a better horse on the day than ever before. "This advice reached the ears of the people who bet heavily, and they poured their quota into the stream of support for The Trump. I believe he was the worst horse for many bookmakers." Ante-post bookmarkers largely escaped the heavy two Cups double liability. Few thought, when The Trump was set for the Caulfield Cup, that lie would go for the Melbourne Cup afterward*.
