COUNTY PROBLEMS.

FINDING A CEMETERY.

CASTOR BAY AMENITIES.

WAITEMATA CO UN CII. MEETS.

Concern was expressed at the monthlj meeting of the Waitemata County Council to-day about the Devonport proposal to take low-lying land in Takapuna riding for cemetery purposes; bv Castor Bay residents over a proposed £9000 loan for tlip road from Milford to Brown's Bay ; and by Karekare residents respecting "the disrepair of the bridge giving access to the boardinghouse there. ° The Devonport Borough Council's proposal to take 24 acres abutting on the concrete road from Takapuna to Northcote was strongly objected to by the Takapuna and Northcote riding members on the grounds that the land was close to a settled area and was subject to flooding, which might create pollution if used as a cemetery. They were of opinion that there were other sites available more suited for a cemetery, and further removed from settlement. The council decided to support objections to the use of the site as a cemetery.

Messrs. William Vause and New, as a deputation from Castor Bay residents, voiced objection to a proposal to obtain from the Highways Board a loan of £9000 for development of the Milford to Brown's Bay road. The burden of their objection was that the present road suited the requirements of the Castor Bay residents, who would prefer to have a greater portion of the rates spent in street lighting and footpath improvements at Caetor Bay.

The chairman informed the deputation that written objections had been received, and these would be placed before the Highways Board, together with the council's application for the loan.

Messrs. Haigli and Badham attended to draw the council's attention to the fuct that the bridge at Karekare was in such a state of disrepair that the service ear could not be takea over it, to the inconvenience of the general public and of guests at the boardinghouse.

Mr. Haigh stated that portion of one end of the bridge was on private land, but the greater portion was on a dedicated road, and with a slight alteration of its angle the whole bridge could be rebuilt on the road. After the matter had been canvassed, the member for the riding promised to give the matter immediate attention.

After having the county inspector's report on several buildings in seaside area*, the council decided to exercise a stricter general supervision of buildings in these areas, and to lmve garage permits terminable annuallv.
