INDIES DEFENCE.
Intensive Dutch Measures Being Taken. BIG ORDERS PLACED. (Received 1 p.m.) THE HAGUE, October 4. The intensive measures taken to strengthen the defences of Dutch East Indies since 1930 when the economy period ended, were described by MajorGeneral Berenschot, head of the Dutch East Indies General Staff, now in Holland. Large orders were placed for aeroplanes and anti-aircraft guns, machine-guns and armoured cars.
The Budget for 1938 includes orders from America of a series of air bombers. Any country wishing to attack the Indies must establish an air b.%> on one of the outer islands, or send an aircraft-carrier. Bombers would be able immediately to attack and destroy them.
Not only will Java be thus defended, but practically the whole archipelago. It would be necessary, however, to build a number of aerodromes at Moluken and New Guinea.
