VALAMITO WINS.

GAY SETON'S SPRINT.

SOME FINE FINISHES.

THE TAUMARUNUI MEETING.

With the exception of a couple of ehowere, the weather was fine though dull for the concluding day of the Taumaruuui Racing Club's annual meeting at Paeroa yesterday. There was a good attendance, and the course wae in good order, while the racing was most interesting throughout, there being some splendid finishes. The sprint event, the Railway Handicap, was particularly exciting, Gay Seton, Sergia, Airam and Trilliarch going over the line together, the judge placing them in that order, there being only inches between them. Valamito won the chief event, the President's Handicap, in good style, while Little Artist accounted for the Farewell Handicap, returning the largest dividend ot the day.

During the afternoon the sum of 10/ was put through the machine, compared with £ 15,008 for the corresponding day last ytar, an increase of £3504 10/ inie made a total for the meeting of £43,648, against £37,043 for the lost annual fixture, an increase of £0005.

After his good showing in the open sprint on the first day, in which he finished thud, and the fact that he was very narrowly beaten over a mile at Avondale last month, when carrying 9.2. Vulnmito was installed second" favourite for the Presidents Handicap. He was always handily placed on the rails, just behind the leaders, and stayed on very solidly to beat Orac by a neck, while the judge was unable to separate Rona Bay and Small Boy for third place.

Erlick was made a very warm favourite for the Novice Handicap as the result of hie forward showing in the Hack Cup on the first day, in which he piloted the field till well into the straight. Land Girl, who had finished second in the Trial Handicap wag next in request. In that event she was well back for the greater portion of the distance, but finished on resolutely. Yesterday Erlick and Kequiem pot away badly, and Land Girl, after lying fourth to the straight, came through, but had to be kept up to her work to score by half a length from Barrister, with Maereana a lontith and a half away third, while Requiem was fourth. Gai Wind and Erlick were next.

Grantham led the field for about two miles and a quarter in the Tally-Ho Steeplechase, but then gave way to Mio Liime and Kinkle, while Emancipation was in third place. The last-named was in front before the straight was reached, and went on to win by four lengths from Mio Liime, with Windsor Lad a nock further back, while Kinkle. the favourite, was next. Grantham, though he failed to see out the distance successfully, gave a great exhibition of jumping.

Trilliarch, Merinl and Airam wore most fancied for the Railway Handicap, but Trilliareh got away badly, and this cost him the race. Prince Vpn, Strathire and Serbia were «non in front, but Trilliarch was rushed up on the outside, and was in charge before half the distance had been covered. He led into the straight, whero he was challenged by Serbia. Oay Seton and Airam, and weakening over tho last bit the best he could do was to pet fourth, the judge declaring in favour of Oay Seton by a nose from Sergia. with Airam a head away, while Trilliarch wae a similar distance back.

The meeting concluded with the Farewell Handicap, and Rainier, Barricade, Inver and Little Artiet were most sought after. Little Artiet showed great improvement on-hie. first day's form to win by a length and a half from Tnver, with Rainier a head away third. Little Artiet was in front till crossing the top. where Ellanni took charge, the latter being followed into the straight by Rainier, Little .Artwt, Grand Score and Oueen Lu. Little Artist hit the front h»lf-wny down and scored decisively. Gr,y Erryp*- was fourth, rind then came Ellanui. Macleion and Barricade.
