MANUREWA TOWN BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting of the Manurewa Town Board was held last night, Mr. W. Ferguson presiding in the absence of Mr. W. T. Cox, the chairman, who wae indispoeed.

Housing. — A reply to the boards request that 12 houses be erected in Manurewa as a start towards overcoming the demand for houees was received from the Department. This etated that Manurewa would receive attention in due course in common with all other areas affected.

Beautifying Society.—A request wae received from the Beautifying Society that the board undertake the cleaning up of the two email reserves on the Great South Road and have the ground lightly dug over. An offer of £3 towards the cost of the work was accepted. Engineering Works.—A liet of proposed works suggested to be undertaken undpr the No. 5 scheme was received from Mr. R. P. Worley, including a wide range of footpatli formation, which would have the effect of employing a good number of men on really essential work. After discussion the board decided to leave Mr. Worley to make the necessary arrangements.

Dismissal of Worker.—A deputation from the Auckland Drivers' Union, consisting of Messrs. A. Bell, F. Muller, B. Chitty and L. G. Matthews, waited upon the board seeking information regarding the dismissal of an employee. A suggestion that the man in question had been victimised was challenged by the chairman, who etated emphatically that that aspect of the case had never arisen. He stressed the board's decieion to uphold the works foreman, who had been vested with full authority over the men employed by the board. Members of the deputation stated that in their opinion the decieion to dispense with the worker's services was far too drastic, as he would have to stand down for eight weeks before having a chance to obtain employment again. A letter was read by a member of the deputation from the ex-foreman, which stated that the worker in question was thoroughly reliable and capable and that the horses in hie care were a credit to him. In answer to a question from a member of the deputation, the foreman, Mr. Sainty, stated that he had never on any occasion used abusive language to the employee, but on the contrary had been the recipient of much abuse from the man concerned.
