RISE IN BACON.
RETAILERS' COMPLAINT.
MARKETING BOARD BLAMED. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. The rapid rise in the price of bacon in the. past six months is the subject of complaint by New Plymouth retailers. Since May 1, when the Government took over the marketing and fixing of wholesnlo prices of bacon, the price list has shown a continued advance. "Some little time ago the Farmers' Union complained of the increased price to the consumer, pointing out that the retail price had risen to I/O a lb for rashers,' , said one grocer. "The Marketing Board's reply was that it had nothing to di> with fixing the retail price, but t!u- I ion rd did not say it had lixed the wholesale price which had caused the rctiiil increase."
Before control heavy sides of baron were !)d a lb, and' heavy rolls IOJd. Since April there has been an advance of 2Jd a lb on sides and 3d on rolls.
"The price paid to liip Tarmer for bacon pigs is, I believe, 0 ."S-Bd," said the grocer, "so the bacon factories appear to be on a good thing."
