UNITED STATES NEGOTIATIONS. "Laoour troubles, general industrial unrest and severe domestic competition among American manufacturers have not been without their benefit to New Zealand and Australia,'' said Mr, A. S. Hawley, a Sydney accountant, who passed throjgh Auckland yesterday by the Monterey after a bueinene visit to the United States. Mr. Haw-ley represents a group OI - Australian manufacttiuring interests which commissioned him to visit America to negotiate for the Australian rights to the manufacture of steel products previously imported from America and Great Britain. Mr. Hawley stated that his trip had been highly successful. Many new steel products, including steam ghovels, would soon be manufactured in Australia. America, he saiil, was smdying Australian conditions closely. Several large manufactuuriug concerns hoped to start subsidiary factories which would, apart from paying royalties to the American promoters, be wholly Australian in their control and staffing. Mr. Hawley is a director of Australian Alloy Steel, Limited, a company substantially interested in' Alloy Steel (N.Z.), Limited, which has its headquarters in C'hristchurch. Certain of the manufacturing arrangements made in America, lie !said, would be available later for the New I Zealand company.
