J)eiby, says: "hi a race made for stayers Avenger won the Derby alter a stirring battle in the last furlong with Ajax and Hua. The lastnamed was acclaimed tiic winner as he raced up to Ajax below the iurlong post, but Avenger then joined in. and was going better than hi* rivals at the post. Ajax held on gamely. Thus the anticipated struL'gle for supremacy between the three greatest colts seen for many years was realised, ('ourtcraft ran greenly, lugging in most of the way. He should do better in Melbourne. "Gold Rod overshadowed the opposition in the hist three furlones of the Epsom Handicap, and placed the issue beyond doubt more than a furlong from the post. Tile time was the slowest for 30 yean but the winning margin did not adequately indicate the ease with which the win wai accomplished. Talking ran shockingly, being beaten half a mile from the finka."
