PARIS TO DAMASCUS.

Italians Gain Victory in Air Contest. NEW ZEALAND HR FOURTH. LOXDOX, August 24. The result of the air race from Paris to Damascus and back was as follows:— Cupini and Baradisi, 17 hours 32 minutes 45 seconds, average speed 352| kilometres an hour, 1; Fiori and Lucchini, 17 hours 57 minutes 2 seconds, 2; Biseo and Mussolini, 18 hours 3 minutes 37 seconds, 3. Flying-Officer A. E. Clouston, formerly of Xew Zealand, finished in fourth place. The Paris correspondent of "The Times" says the striking superiority of the Italian over the French aeroplanes in the race has aroused bitter comment. Though the French aeroplanes were commercial ones and the Italian were military machines, the result is regarded as a severe lesson in the lack of preparation and co-operation. Inferior material is blamed. The Right Press declares that France's best pilots were betrayed by defects due to the Socialists' direction j of the Air Ministry and to Socialist labour legislation.
