Railwaymen's Union Secretary And Nationalisation. "SWEATED" COMPETITION. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LOXDON, July 5. Mr. J. Griffiths, presiding at the conference of the National Union of Railwaymen at Plymouth, recorded that the accumulated funds amounted to £2,037,993. He emphasised the need of improving wages and conditions, and added that the union could not allow sweated road competition to cut rates. If railway companies could not pay wages guaranteeing a reasonable living standard, the Government should nationalise the railways and all forms of transport, he contended.
