HYPOID GEARS.

Hypoid rear *xle gears, now coniing into general use in the automobile industry," made their first appearance in 1926 on Packard cars; 'They have been used continuously by Packard eince then. The advantages of this type of gears are important. They are claimed to be quieter in operation, to have longer life, and to make possible a lower car without the necessity of a tunnelor box for the propeller shaft in the floor of the rear passenger compartment. Teeth of the pinion, or driving gears, are larger and stronger, and more pairs of them are simultaneously in contact with the teeth of the ring, or driven gear. This reduces stresses in the gear teeth, ensuring longer life. Hypoid gears also possess inherent manufacturing advantages which contribute to their quietness of operation. In me in a car, they are self-generating, which ensures continuous quietness.
One of the main points of difference )>otween the hypoid and spiral bevel types of gears is that the pinion of the liypoi'l gears, as used in automobiles, meshes with the ring gear at a point oelow the centreline of the ring gear rather than at, the centreline, as in the spiral bevel gears. Another important difference is that teeth of hypoid gears have more. of a sliding action against each other than is true with the spiral bevel gears.
