APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HASTINGS, Monday. Important appointments in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research were announced to-night by the Minister of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Hon. D. 0. Sullivan. Mr. M. M. Cooper, a Rhodes scholar, formerly at Massey College, who is at present studying the economics of the animal industry at Oxford, has been appointed to the headquarters staff. He will commence duty at the end of July, and also will probably act as joint secretary of the Animal Diseases Bureau. Dr. Vernon, a son of a former headmaster of the Palmerston Xorth High School, has been appointed mycologist at the Dairy Research Institute. He will spend two months in England studying the problem of the prevention of mould in New Zealand cheese, before taking up duty. The appointment of Dr. H. J. Finlay, of Dunedin, who is joining the Department as micro-palaeontologist for the special study of the ancient marine animal remains in the geological strata associated with oil production, wae announced on Saturday. Dr. J. Hoeking, a son of the late Mr. Justice Hosking, has been reappointed to the Department. Dr. Hosking will be in charge of the work on the organic chemistry of grasses, plants, timber, etc. Further appointments in the course of being made, added Mr. Sullivan, were the head of the Wool Manufacturers' Research Association and head of the newly-formed Tobacco Research Association.
