INDEPENDENCE DAY.
CALLS ON U.S. CONSUL
AUCKLAND CELEBRATIONS.
Official calls were made on the Consul for the United States of America, Mr. J. G. Groeninger, to-day, in honour of the 161 st anniversary of the Declara* tion of Independence of the United States, which fell yesterday. This morning calls were made at the Consular office by the deputy-Mayor, the Hon. B. Martin, and the town clerk, Mr. J. Melling, representing the City Council, the Hon. T. Blood worth (chairman), Mr. W. Brook Smith (secretary), and Mr. D. Holderness (superintendent) of the
Auckland Harbour Board, members of the Auckland Consular Corps, Bishop Liston (representing the Catholic Church), the Collector of Customs, Mr. J. Mcintosh, and the Rev. H. K. Vickery, port chaplain. On July 4, 1776, at Philadelphia the Declaration of Independence was adopted unanimously by the American Congress. It stated that the American colonies had been subjected to repeated injuries and usurpations at the hands of the King of Great Britain and that henceforth they were absolved from all allegiance to/the British Crown. ' Mr. Groeninger held a private reception at Ms. home. to-day.
