N.Z. COASTAL SURVEY.

H.M. ENDEAVOUR SAILS. HaUBAXI GTJEF OPERATIONS. In a hazy fog which a warming sun was doing its best to dispel, H.M. survey ship Endeavour sailed shortly after nine o'clock this morning to commence the survey of the New Zealand coastline, a project which is expected to extend over about ten years. On Thursday the survey ship transferred from the Calliope wharf to the Western wharf for coaling, returning over the harbour the following day. The initial work will be done in the Tamaki Strait, as far as Fonui Island, inshore soundings being taken from the two 28ft power launches which are specially equipped with echo-sounding apparatus for plotting the contours of the sea bed. Within two or three weeks the Endeavour will return to Auckland for re-coaling and she will continue her mission until just before Christmas, when she will be docked. In the same way the survey vessel will carry on unobtrusively with her work until towards the end of 1939, when she will be replaced by a new ship, the keel of which is soon to be laid in British shipbuilding yards. Naturally there is a vast amount of draughting and clerical work in conjunction with the actual practical surveying, and for this purpose accommodation has been provided for the complement of the survey ship at the Devonport naval base. The office, which is in a building shared with part of the Harbour Board staff, comprises an airy, well-lit room replete with drafting tables, filing cabinets and drawers.
