An Allied Airways twin-engined 'plane, the Silver Ghost, crashed and burst into flames after taking off from Thurso, Caithness, for Aberdeen.

A farmer and his son working in a field saved the lives of the pilot and seven passengers, including six women, pulling the passengers out, through an emergency exit in the roof of the cabin.

The last woman, hauled out by her neck and hair, had her clothes on fire.

The 'plane was destroyed.

It is announced that the actress, Miss Florence Desmond, will marry early in September Mr. Charles Hughesdon, a junior partner in a stockbroking firm. Miss Desmond was married to Captain Campbell Black—who was killed 18 months later in a collision at Speke aerodrome, Liverpool—hi April, 1935, following his Melbourne Centenary air race victory. Their health was toasted in the gold Davis Cup.

After climbing 12,000 ft they encountered a hail and snow storm and a violent air current, which wrecked their machine. The pilots parachuted to safety. Their barograph was found later.

READY FOR FLIGHTS.

TRANSATLANTIC SERVICE. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 4. Everything is now ready for the first experimental Transatlantic commercial flight, which is expected to begin tomorrow evening. The Imperial Airways flying-boat Caledonia will leave Foynes, Ireland, under the command of Captain Arthur Wilcockson.
