BRIGHT CENTURY BY M. W. WALLACE.

HZ TOPS 400. Lamason and Gallichan Also Make Many Runs. SOMERSET REOPENS STRONGLY United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON. July 1. In reply to Somerset's first innings total of 254, the Xew Zealand eleven compiled 404. When stumps were drawn on the second day at Taunton, the county had 126 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets. A scintillating century by Wallace paved the way for New Zealand to secure a good position. The Auckland player was brilliant, scoring beautiful strokes to all parts of the field. His leg hitting especially was strong. His dazzling century was made at the rate of a run a minute, while his second 50 occupied only half an hour. He hit 19 fours, one five, and only a dozen singles. Lamason approached nearer to true form in a brisk half-century in just over an hour's play. He was slower after lunch facing the second new ball, but was consistently sound for two and a quarter hours. He scored nine boundaries. Somerset has two very fine bowlers in Wellard and Andrews, the latter taking three quick wickets with the new ball. Weir and Gallichan added 70 in a timely partnership for the eighth wicket. Gallichan batted for 80 minutes, his solid innings being characterised l> v forward strokes made with weightyforce. His half-century included five fours. Dunning demonstrated his all-round usefulness by assisting Gallichan in a ninth wicket partnership of 40. Cowie was vigorous, scoring four boundaries in one over. Wallace, Lamason. Gallichan, Dunning and Cowie returned their highest scores of the tour. Somerset batted for an hour and three-quarters. Lee and Gimblett both exceeded the half-century, and they scored quickly after the cheap loss of the first two batsmen. The attendance was over 2000. Scores: — SOMERSET.
