The principal matches on the tenth day of the British lawn tennis championships, at Wimbledon, were the semi-finals of the women's singles. These were won by Miss Dorothy Round (the winner of the 1934 title) and Mile. Jedrzejowska (champion of Poland). Mile. Jedrzejowska's supreme steadiness and forceful driving eclipsed the versatility of Miss Alice Marble (United States champion), who had erratic spells. Miss Round easily defeated Mine. Rene Mathieu (France). The Englishwoman made only two errors in the second set, in which she lost only five points. The 103.1 and 1080 women's doubles champions. Misses K. Stammers and F. .Tames, were defeated l>y another British pair, Mesdames M. R. King and J. B. Pittman. Bromwieh and Sproule were unable to counter the Americans' vigorous game in the men's doubles. Although the Australians were out-matched by more experienced and versatile opponents they fought every stroke. C'ramni and Henkel entered the semi-final by defeating a British pair who were training as prospective Davis Cup defenders. The Germans were definitely dominant, especially overhead. Hujrhes and Tuckey (1930 champions) defeated the Japanese ill a contest characterised by the clever net volleys and vigorous services of the Englishmen. Hughes and Tuckey meet Menzel and Hecht (Czechoslovakia) in the semifinals, in which Cramm and Henkel play Budge and Mako. Mile. Jedrzejowska in 1936 four times deteated Miss K. Stammers, who was ranked second in Britain to Mitss Kotind that season. The Polish champion ako lias several victories to her credit over Miss H. H. Jacobs, who. however, had her revenge in the semi-final at Wimbledon last year. 6—4, 6—2. Frail Sperling eliminated Mins Hound in the quarter finals, then beat Mine. Mathieu 6-3. 0 2 in the other semi-final, but lost to Misn Jacobs in the final. 6—2. 4—B, 7—5. The latter subsequently lost her American title, held by her for four years, to Miss Marble, who beat Mise Jacobs in the final lit Forest Hills, 4—6. 6—3. 6—2. Mile. Jedrzejowska has been in splendid lonn all this season, and on June 12 conquered Miss Marble in the final of the Kent championship. 6—l, 9—ll. 6—l. Immediately after the Wimbledon tourney Germany and Czechoslovakia meet in the European final of the Davis Cup. This match will be played on the Continent. The winner next plays the I'mted States in the inter-zone final at Wimbledon on July 17. to decide which country will challenge Great Britain for the trophy, which it has held continually from 1033 to 1936 inclusive.
