The weather and the ground conditions for the Springboks' first Test against Australia are likely to be as unpleasant as they were last Saturday, as a wet week-end was predicted yesterday. The Wallabies' team is:— Full-back: R. Rankiu (N.S.W.). Three-quarters: J. D. Kelaher, C. H. Towers, captain, T. P. Pauling (N.S.W.), R. W. Dorr (Victoria). Five-eighth: V. Richards (N.S.W.). Half-back: J. M. S. McShane (N.S.W.). _ . Forwards: K. M. Ramsay, A. J. Hodgson, K. S. VVindon, F. E. Hutchinson, W. H. Gerutti (N.S.W.), V. Wilson, E. T. Bonis, V. Birmingham (Queensland).
j The only vear in which Australia has met South Africa in Tests was 1933, as the 1921 Springboks which toured New Zealand did not play the Commonwealth. The four games in Sydney comprised three against New South Wales, and the other against the Metropolitan fifteen. South Africa won them ail. The visitors beat New South \\ ales 25—10 IC—ll and 2*—9. the score in the match against the combined city clubs being 14—8. Previous Testa. Results of the 1933 Tests in Springbokland: — j u l y B.—At Capetown, South Africa won 17—3 (half-time 6—o). July 22.—At Durban, Australia won 21__6 (half-time 13—C). August 12.—At Johannesburg. South Africa won 12—3 (half-time, no score). August 26.—At Port Elizabeth, South Africa won 11—0 (half-time s—o). RBillman, Wallaby five-eighth, was injured in the first minute, necessitating O. Bridle plaving in the rearguard. September 2.—At Bloemfontem. Australia won 1.")—4 (half-time 12—4). G. Brand potted Africa's goal. D. L. Cowper also kicking a field goal for Australia. Owing to an operation for appendicitis the visiting captain, Dr. SV. W. Rtf*, <l>d not take his place at full-back until the final Test, when he kept his line intact. S. J Malcolm, vice-captain, did not go behind the scrum until the fourth Test, due to a broken leg. The captain in the first three Tests was, therefore. D. L Cowper. the Victorian, who scored one of Australia's tries in 1931 at Eden Park, when New Zealand won 20 —13. Bennie Osier was the Springbok captain in all five games. D. Craven, the disappointing 14-stonc scrum-half against New South Wales last week, when tne State won 17—0, played in four Tests. Pierre de Villiers (reserve on the 1!»3< tour) replacing him in the fourth.
