CALLIOPE CLUB.

COMBINED MEETING.

TWO SCOTTISH RUNNERS

Sixty runners took part in the combined run at Birkenhead on Saturday afternoon, when the Calliope Club entertained the Presbyterian members. A trail of (ii miles, started from Zimi Hill, along Glenlield Koad, through Eskdale to BirkcTale lagoon, thence by Stanley and Coronation Koads to a stretch of heavy count rv which led to Ptipuke Koad and back to /.ion Hill. Four packs were led by W. K. Drummnnd (slow), L. Dixon (intermediate), S. R. Goudio (fast), and .1. I. H. Neil (racing). In the slow pack a steady pace was set and White and Uardmau showed that the going was to their liking, while in the Presbyterian ranks Cruwi: and Brown, recent recruits from Scotland, showed to advantage in the run-in. The intermediates settled down weil. Lauigan showing good form in anticipation of next Saturday's race. Stevenson and Dean, the first two men home in Presbyterian's novice ruce last week, proved successful in the run-in. Ambler and Rogers led all the wav in the fast pack, eventually leaving it when the racing pack passed. Gladding was in good fettle, while Goudio showed promise of good performance later. Robertson and Hislop appeared fittest among the racing men, with Clow worthily upholding Calliope's prestige. Ambler, electing to finish witli the racing pack, ran well to place third in the run-in. The I'apatoetoe Harrier Club held a handicap run over a six-mile course. Results:—D. Porter (4.30) 1, A. McDonald (o.O) 2, H. Thomas (3.0) ;>, A. Potter (5.30) 4. Time 35.30. Fastest time C. Littler (scr). LYNNDALE CLUB. The Lynndale Harriers' Club held a pack run on Saturday, when the held was split up into two packs, ajid left at an interval of 15 minutes. At Poiut Chevalier Hall they divided up into the usual four packs and did the last half of the journey at a good pace. In the racing pack E. Crotnpton was lirst home, and he was followed by T. E. Collins. W. A. Rriggs and J. Porrift in that order. It. Harris, E. Taylor and C. Perriitt. of the fast pack, are three good men and were well to the fore. In the intermediate pack G. Bell, T. Henderson and H. Cooper are line men ait pacing aiAI hold one another very well. Under S. Darbyshire the slow pack nan very well with A. Nunns and T. Price being most prominemt. 'VARSITY CLUB. The University Harrier Club held a run on Saturday, starting from the foot of Victoria Avenue. Twenty-six members turned out. and four packs—racing, fast,, medium and slow—were formed. In the slow pack under H. Maxwell, all teamed very well. B. N. Harden, W. B. Lang and A. Kay showed" pleasing form and should Boon move up into the medium pack. The fast and medium packs, led by A. Ingham and R. M. Kay, unfortunately lost the trail, and as a result extended their run by some three miles. L. Collins showed a promising return to the form he displayed last season. The racing pack was under the whistle of Ted Stephenson. These runners are getting really lit and did not let up at all over the whole distance. .1. Tyson A Ball and E. H. D'Ath-Weston, were outstanding and teamed well for a hard and close finish. BAPTIST CLUB. The Baptist Harrier Club held its annual novice and veteran races on Saturday over a course of about five miles, starting from the Avondale Baptist Church. Half a mile from the finish of the novice Hare drew up to Edgar, passed him and held first place till the finish. The first four men to finish were: ,T. Hare (26.30), 1; S. Edgar (27.31), 2: P. Kendon (28.0). and R. Whitten (28.12). The actual results were :— Novice Race: J. Hare (26.30> 1- G Ferguson (29.15), 2; H. Ferguson (31.0), Veterans' Race: S. Edgar (27.31), 1; P Ilendon (28.0), 2; R. Whitten (28.12), The result of a sealed handicap was as follows:—J. Hare 1, H. Hammond 2.

TECHNICAL CLUB. The Technical Harriers' Club held n run from tin- Onehunga dressing shed in ( hureh Street. The weather was ideal, unci the best field of the season turned out. Three packs, led by A. CBradley, S. Wilshere and T. Wilson nut' in some, solid running, covering a course of between sis and seven miles. The whole pack ran as a racing nam. Cates Wilshere and J. S. Nicholson were the outstanding three of the middle park, while in the slow one Gaetb, Dinner and Goldfinch led tile way. WESLEY CLUB. ■ The run of the Wesley Harrier Club took the novel form of hares and hounds The trail led from the Onehimga Methodist Church fiver a rough course embracing the Penrose and 'IV I'anupa districts covering six and a half miles The runners numbering 30, were dispatched at 15-seeonu* intervals. The hares, who left eight minutes ahead of the first runner, deceived the hounds by laying several false trails which resulted in the runners being bunched into three separate packs The finish resulted : —Sharpies 1, S. Ladies' Singles.—Fran Sperling beat Madame Mathieu, 6—2, o—l. CHILIAN WINS AGAIN. BEATS AMERICAN CHAMPIOX. In the final of the Middlesex ladies' lawn tennis championship, on Saturday, Senorita Lizana, of Chili, defeated Miss Alice Marble United States, o—7, it—7. PERRY DEFEATS VINES. UONDON, May 30. Fred Perry defeated Ellsworth Vines at Wembley. 6—4, (i —4, 12—10, and won the Coronation Cup by two matches to one. Critics regard Perry as reaching greater heights than he did as an amateur. He dominated Vines throughout. Hans Xusslein won the Coronation Plate, beating W. X. Tilden, lu—B. o —3.
