STAFF ALARMED.
LOCAL HOSPITAL.
A SERIOUS SITUATION.
MR. F. MACKY'S COMMENT
SUGGESTIONS EXPLAINED.
Alarm ni imp Kiiggi stion of Sir Louis Bariiett. ;:< -idriit of the Royal Austra]il? j;ui 1 .illegi , of Surgeons, that the (~,11,-r might havf to consider the withdrawal i>! lii*' Auckland Hospital from the li-t "t iii-titiit ioii-< approved by the r ,,]],-.'_... fur tin , purpose of surgh-al edueatiiin. "'!- i'.\pi e-i-ied to-day by Mr. Frank \[;ii- : ;v. 1:1.1 iriiiMii of the honorary staff o f ti,,. Aih-klan.l Hospital. "Tli!'- mailer i- desperately important t0 th" Aii ki.in.l Hospital.'" said Mr. Murky. "'I lie chairman of the board, Kev. VV. C. Wood, has declared that Sir L.hiN' .-t.-itement was inspired by soineniie in Auckland. That is an innuendo that it «!•- in-pired by me. or by some member uf the honorary staff. I want to make it unite char that that is entirely wrong."' It was nliviniia. ««i<l Mr. Macky, that the inspiration had come from the urgent necessity "' the situation. Sir Louis had hud t>> make his announcement in the milliner in which he had done so to indicate as plainly as possible his deep foiise of a grave situation. His paramount thought had obviously been the l>.-otection of the public "It i« plain that Sir Louis views the situation very seriously, and we have got to take an equally serious view," declared Mr. Macky. "We realise that the teaching facilities of the Auckland Hospital are in jeopardy. We deeply appreciate the possible necessity of the step suggested by Sir Louis, ami we deplore the suggestion that the Auckland Hospital be cut off the list. "The members of the Australasian College of Surgeons have a very high sense of their duties and strive always for the highest possible standard. Thev would not erorss Auckland off the list without mature consideration. We are naturally alarmed when such a suggestion is made, but we cannot regulations of the college, nor can we alter their ideas of the standards that a hospital shall attain and maintain." If the Auckland Hospital was cut off the list and was no longer recognised by the college, the experience gained by residents would not count and would no't he taken into consideration by the college when application was "made for fellowship. Mr. Macky pointed out that if such a position were brought ahout the Auckland Hospital would most certainly find difficulty in getting resident doctors.
