LONDON EXCHANGE.
OUTLOOK NOW HEALTHIER,
LONDON, May 6. The settlement to-day on the London Stock Exchange concluded without any defaulters. The City correspondent of the Australian Associated Proas understands that a number of weak open positions were negotiated by means of a fund, to which several leading brokers contributed. Others accepted heavy losses. The markets naturally were active throughout the day but the outlook is now healthier. Mining houses vigorously deny that financial groups were responsible .for the slump in gold shares. On the contrary these groups supported the market when a stampede seemed inevitable and as a result were bearing a considerable proportion of the loss. Quotations: Mount Lyell, 40/7%; New Guinea, 2/2%.
