GIRL'S WIN.
TRIUMPHANT ESSAYISTS. LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION PRIZES. All five prizes in a recent essav competition conducted by "Headway" 1 (the official organ of the 'League of Nations Union) were awarded to girls. The subject of the essay was '"What Interested Me Most in the Christmas Holiday Lectures." A course of lectures known as the Christmas holiday lectures on world affairs was arranged by the League of Nations Union (Great Britain) at the Regent Street Polytechnic, London. Among the chairmen and lecturers were Dr. Gilbert Murray, Professor Laski, Lord Eustace Percy and Mr. Vernon Bartlett (Creat Britain); Dr. Rosl (Germany); M. Maisky (Russia) and Mr. Sen (China). Three hundred school children attended the course, and it is interesting to note that while the numbers of boys and girls were almost equal, the majority of entrants in the subsequent essay competition were girls, and all prizes were won by girls. The names of the winners were iris Murdoch, Pauline Howe, Elizabeth Porteous, Vera Fox and Nora Boloff.
The essays (states an overseas paper) clearly show the keenness and intelligence with which they listened to the lectures and also indicates that they are worthy of and appreciate the privilege they enjoy in making peisonal contact with great statesmen who are able to give them first-hand news of 'the international situation. The essays display faith in and loyalty to the League; realisation of the need of co-operation, toleration and justice in working for the establishment of a lasting world peace.
