NAZI 'VARSITY BAN.
British Delegates Will Not Attend Celebrations.
POLITICAL STATUS RESENTED. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, April 28. Oxford University has withdrawn its acceptance of an invitation to the Gottingen University bi-centenary celebrations. This follows the recent decision of British University vicechancellors who took the same attitude in abstention from Heidelberg celebrations last year on the ground of reluctance to associate with a University where learning was subjected to political purposes and professors were dismissed on political grounds.
FARCICAL TRIAL. Roman Catholics Guilty of Treason. BIASSED PRESIDENT. (Received 2 p.m.) BERLIN, April 28. Four of the seven Roman Catholics, whose trial for treason, and being supporters of the United Communist Catholic Front, opened on April 7, were convicted. Father Rossaint, of Dusseldorf, was sentenced to 11 years, and the other three to lesser terms.
The remaining three were acquitted. It was a farcical trial, with the decision a foregone conclusion, the president being hostile throughout.
The president, summing up, said: "The welfare of the people is the supreme law. Anyone who dares to touch the outward form of the community of German people, is guilty of the worst crime."
