A SPEEDY PACER.

FORM OF STAR PRONTO. But for breaking after the field had gone a mile there docs not seem any doubt that Star Pronto would have won the Fergusson Handicap. He -was going well within himself in front and his backers were on good terms with themselves. However, when he broke he lost fully fifty yards, and his task of overhauling the leaders appeared well nigh hopeleee. He wae sent along as the field raced along the back the last time, and put in a brilliant run, and actually overtook the leaders, but the task was a shade beyond Lim and he weakened at the distance post and could only get fourth. He was produced later in the Papatoetoe Handicap, and again was unlucky to be beaten. He began particularly well and was tucked in on the fence in third position as the field came into the straight. B. Dyer then made for an opening on the outside of Xeivies Last, but in the meantime Lady Fame had gone through fast and just ' beat him to it, with the result that Star Pronto had to be eased up aaul pulled to tlie outside. Once clear, he put in a great effort, and just went under by a head. But for missing the opening it looked as if Star Pronto must have won. as it all happened within half a furlong of the post. Star Pronto is probably one of the best pacers ever raced in Auckland, but he is not reliable, and there is always that I degree of doubt about him. '
