TROUBLESOME SEAMAN.
ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE. On a charge of being absent without leave from his ship, the s.s. Coptic, to which he pleaded guilty, David McConnell. aged 50, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment by Messrs. Dawson Donaldson and John Donald, J.P.'s, in the Police Court to-day. An order was also made that he be placed ol» hoard the ship when she sails from Auckland about April 30.
Senior Sergeant Flanagan said that on Thursday when the Coptic was at Auckland the accused had refused work, complaining that he was ill, but he declined to be seen by a doctor. He left the ship, but later returned under the influence of liquor. Again yesterday he refused work. The; ship's officers stated that they had had trouble with the accused at every port, and they were afraid that his example would be followed by others of the crew.
