KIPLING SOCIETY.

There was evidence that Auckland held many lovers of Kipling, said Mr. F. S. Townley-Little, who presided on Tuesday over the first meeting for 1937 of the Kipling Society. After reviewing the activities of the society during the past year, which had shown a great development, he called for a vote of thanks to Mrs. E. Buchanan, for whose work the society was grateful. One of the most interesting features of the past season, he said, had been the inspection of Kipling's original manuscript of "Mandalay," and the "Conundrum of the Workshop," both of which were in the possession of Mrs. M. Stuart Boyd. Other items of litrary interest were cuttings from the "Sind Gazette" of 1889, featuring the original publication of "From Sea to Sea," and a poem, "In Partibue," which were donated to the society by Mrs. Cunliffe-Parker. Readings were given by Mrs. Key-Jones, Mr. Williams, Mr. Cruickshank, Mr. TownleyLittle and Mr. N. Boyes.
