AID FOR SPAIN.
N.Z. MEDICAL UNIT.
REQUEST TO BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Appeals for financial help were made to the Newmarket Borough Council last evening by a deputation from the Auckland Medical Aid Committee for Spain, but the council decided to take no action. On behalf of the deputation Mr. W. J. Moore asked to hold one or more openair meetings in the borough at which a collection could be taken up, sought permission to take up a street collection, and asked the council to donate a sum of money to the funds of the committee. The Auckland committee, said Mr. Moore, wae cooperating with a similar body in Dunedin. presided over by Dr. D. G. McMillan, M.P. for Dunedin West. It was aimed to send a medical unit of six volunteers to aid the Spanish Government. Australia and Canada had already eent units.
The cost of such a unit would be £680." said Mr. Moore. "We intend to purchase and equip the unit and transport it to Spain. We have had no official assurance that the Spanish Government will maintain it when it arrives, but if it does not we will aim at raising enough money to bring the members of the unit back to New Zealand."
Mr. S. Donaldson, Mayor of Newmarket, asked how much money was already in hand. Mr. Moore: Over £100 in Dunedin and between £35 and £40 in Auckland. Mr. Donaldson told the deputation that a donation from the council was out of the question. After the council had given consideration to the request* in committee it was decided to take no action.
