GRAIN AND PRODUCE.
MARKETS ARE STEADY. FREIGHT RATES ADVANCE. There have been few changes in the local grain and produce market* since ]ast report. Prices all round are etill high and recent increases in freight rates are likely to accentuate the firming tendency. New season's oat* are now coming forward from the south and merchant* report the quality a« satisfactory, especially Dun*, of which «ome excellent samples have been received. B (iartons i'.re quoted unchanged at 4 10 per bushel. Duns are ;l(l cheaper at ."> t> and flipped Algerians arc priced 3d higher at 5 (i. Oaten sheaf chaff is unaltered at £9 2, 6 per ton. The fowl wheat market is very firm in the south. All parties are awaiting the announcement ot the Government's marketing polity anil meanwhile Canterbury farmers are disinclined to sell, while local merchants are hesitant at making commitments beyond the absolute needs of the moment. Local quotations are unchanged at 6,'10 per bushel. The pollard position is unchanged. Supplies from Australia are more plentiful, but a recent increase in freight rates will operate against any local price reduction. Business is fairly free at £9 2/6 per ton. Local ie available at £7 15' per ton, but stocks are small and orders have to be rationed. Bran is in ample supply at £f) 13/ per ton. There is no improvement in the maize situation. Small quantities are placed at 8. 2 per bushel. Barley is firm at 6' per buehel for clipped and undipped 4d less. Potatoes from the Manawatu district are of good quality and sell freely at £8 10/ per ton. Pukekohe and local'supplies are available at 4/3 per sugar bag. Onion* are plentiful and in face of a restricted demand merchants have dropped their price to 9, 6 per cwt. Autumn deliveries of grass seeds and fertilisers are now being made and merchants report excellent business. Wholesale Current Prices. Pollard and Bran.—Mill prices: Pollard, £7 per ton; bran, £0.
