MINISTER ASTOUNDED.
HOSPITAL WORKERS , PAY. DESIRE TO FORM UNION. (By Telegraph.—Pretw Association.) DUNEDIN, Monday. A deputation to the Minister of Employment, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, from workers and attendants at hospitals sought either permiesion to form a union or to join the Hotel and Reetaurant Workere' Union. It was stated that laundreseee ftl Talboys Home received only 15/ weekly, while mental patient attendants got £5 15/8 a fortnight. Mr. Armstrong stated he wa« astounded at the rates of pay. He thought the intention of the Minister of Health wae that all institutions under his control should obey the spirit of the law. The Hon. P. Fralser, he eaid, would welcome hospital workers forming a union. It could be argued thet' since hospital boards did not operate for grain the Arbitration Act did not apply; but he was sure the boards would faoe up to the position. He added that he would make representations to the Minister of Health on the eubject.
