POPULAR SETTLER.
old mourdcsviixe resident (From Our Own Correspondent.) MORRINSVILLE, Monday. To bid au revoir to Mr. F. J. Marshall, a pioneer settler of the Morrineville district who leave* on a trip to England this week, a smoke concert, attended by sportsmen from all parts of the Waikato, was held in the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening. Mr. Marshall settled in Morrinsville over fifty years ago and has occupied many positions, including those of first Mayor of Morrinsville and first president of the Morrinsville A. and P. Society. Throughout his career he has been a noted breeder and owner of thoroughbred horses. Mr. F. C. Kennedy presided and among those present were Messrs. G. W. Vercoe, past president of the Waikato Racing Club; M. H. Tims, president of the Waipa Racing Club; W. J. Aitken, president of the Morrinsrille A. and P. Society, and the Mayor of Morrineville, Mr. W. T. Osborne. There wae an attendance of about a hundred. On behalf of those present Mr. A. Needham made a presentation to Mr. Marshall of a. well-filled wallet and expressed the appreciation of those who had subscribed. The donore, he said, included friends from all parts of the Auckland Province and several racing clubs. In reply Mr. Marshall said he had been much affected by the evidences of goodwill. He arrived in New Zealand in 1884, when he landed at Auckland with a consignment of pedigree sheep and cattle for Mr. T. Morrin, the owner of t)ie Lockerbie estate at Morrinirille. For 30 years ha wa ß in business in Morrineville.
