CONDITIONS IN N.Z. * DESERTER'S ADMISSION. SEAMAN SENT TO PW»OK. Surrendering himself to the Queen's wharf police veeterdav. George Herbert Manuel, ataman, aged 26, appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, when he pleaded guilty to a charge, that being lawfully engaged to the sea (service, he deserted the S.S. Waimana on January 20. The assistant marine superintendent of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company said Manuel wan missing when the Waimana sailed from Auckland for London on February 13. The master left instructions for a warrant to be obtained for Manuel's arrest. "I left under great provooation," explained Manuel, in pleading guilty. "We were underfed and overworked on that ship." "Jt is very easy to make that statement now," said the magistrate. "I [ sti|j»oee you thought conditions were more favourable in New Zealand!" '"Yes, they certainly are, your Honor," was Manuel's reply. The magistrate said the Court cjmld not encourage that sort of thing. Manuel wan sentenced to three weeks' imprisonment, and was also ordered to forfeit any wages owing to him.
